Harlyn Dale “Doc” Raymond, the son of Ferne (Hauser) and Merton Raymond, was born on July 27, 1925, in Sanborn, Iowa. He graduated from Sanborn Public High School. He enlisted in the United States Army on October 22, 1943, and served in the Army Rangers during World War II. Doc was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945.
On June 18, 1947, Doc was united in marriage to Jeanette Sullivan, and they made their home in Sanborn. They were blessed with a daughter, Cherie. Doc operated State of Iowa Liquor Store in Sanborn for 42 years.
An active, civic-minded person, Doc had served on the board of directors for several community organizations over the years, including the Sanborn Funeral Home, Sanborn Golf & Country Club, Sanborn Development/Sanborn Housing, and was currently a director for the Prairie View Nursing Home board. He was a member of the 10-20 Club and First Presbyterian Church. He was an avid sports fan, and a “regular” at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn sporting events. He also enjoyed watching Cubs baseball and Sioux City Musketeers hockey. He passed away at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on March 17, 2012, at the age of 86.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jeanette, on July 4, 1994, and one brother, Dean.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Cherie and her husband, Rock Koontz of Sanborn; two grandchildren, Jenna and Jared; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn; a brother, Gayle Raymond and his wife, Bonnie of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a sister, Sherryl and her husband, Jack Jones of Wahpeton, Iowa; sister–in-law: Donna Raymond of Sanborn, IA; many other relatives and friends.
