Obituary of Mildred Marie Peters
Please share a memory of Mildred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mildred Marie “Millie” Peters, one of two children of Charles and Emma (Carstensen) Muhs, was born October 18, 1924, in Hartley, Iowa. She spent her youth in the Hartley vicinity where she received her early education through the eighth grade.
On November 27, 1947, Millie was united in marriage to Fred Peters at Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hartley. The new couple made their home in Hartley where Fred was employed as a truck driver and Millie managed the household affairs. Their family was made complete when their son, LeRoy, was born January 11, 1950.
Millie found great satisfaction in being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She had always loved to bake, so you could usually find something good to eat on the kitchen counter. She also enjoyed dancing and would go as often as she could…wearing her high heels, of course! Bowling with friends was another of Millie’s favorite pastimes.
Following Fred’s death in 1971, Millie decided to stay with her mother, Emma Muhs, for a short time. She then lived in an apartment at Handicap Village in Sheldon, Iowa. She spent her time off doing crafts and watching TV – never wanting to miss The Golden Girls or Dr. Phil. However, if her grandkids came to visit, the TV was shut off so she could spend all her time with them. She simply adored babies – her own grandchildren, their children and even one great-grandchild. They all meant the world to her.
Millie was able to do a little traveling while living in Sheldon – even took a cruise and visited Hawaii! Yet her favorite thing was riding with LeRoy on his motorcycle – she looked forward to being out in the wind and sunshine.
Millie became a resident at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley in 2009. She continued to enjoy the things she always loved to do and never turned down a motorcycle ride with LeRoy; something she did until she was almost 95! She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley.
On Sunday, August 6, 2023, at the age of 98 years, Millie joined loved ones who had gone before: her husband, Fred; her parents, Charles and Emma Muhs; and one brother, Wayne Muhs.
She is survived by her son, LeRoy and his wife, Darlene Peters of Hartley, Iowa; two grandchildren: Jason Peters of Hartley, Iowa and Kristy (Ray) Wiederholt of Nashville, Tennessee; four great-grandchildren: Hailey, Devin, Sara, and Taya; one great-great-grandchild, Sophia; other friends and relatives.
