I talked to my Vietnam buddy today and he said he tried to call ‘Roede’ (as we called him) and his phone was no longer in service. I checked online and found this obituary. We served together in the scout (sometimes called recon) platoon of the 2/47th, 3rd brigade, 9th infantry division in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and Cambodia. Roede was well liked by everyone. I can’t remember a time he was not ready for a mission- whether it was a night mission to set up an ambush, helicopter insertions in unsecured LZs, patrolling in the air cushioned vehicles or insertions and ambush off the PBRs of the brown water navy. Our unit spearheaded one of the Cambodia invasion points at the Parrot’s Beak. Roede served honorably with courage and dedication to his duty. His service honored his family and community. SO SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF DICK. I GOT TO KNOW HIM OVER 20 YEARS AGO. I BOUGHT HOGS IN ASHTON FOR JOHN MORRELL. HE HELPED DICK AND KENNY BENZ BRING HOGS IN TO MY BUYING STATION. THAT NEXT SUMMER I ALSO STARTED WORKING FOR BENZ'S. DICK AND I BALED SQUARE BALES TOGETHER. HE WAS A REALLY GREAT GUY AND WILL BE MISSED BY MANY PEOPLE. MY SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY.

It takes a special man to treat another kid like his own. Richard always treated me like a daughter and I have so many special memories of him and with him. I miss him so much already. I hope that Carrie, Michael, and family find peace, and I'll be thinking if you all in this hard time.

Where does one begin with saying good=bye? Thank goodness for memories that one has as no one can take them away. I remember being neighbors & Dick was always so friendly & helpful (when needed), A person who serves his country deserves more than the recognition they usually get. The video tribute is the best I have ever seen. What a beautiful saying good-by tribute to him. Our deepest sympathy to you-Lori Hoffman
