My condolences. Coach Butt was a teacher as well. Perhaps my favorite history teacher. He taught us how to learn. Coach... Not only girls basketball, but he was an assistant football coach during the Duane Twait coaching years. In fact, during the '71 season & '72 season, he would strap on a hemet & pads & go out on the practice field with us. He was 37-38 years old & smacked us in practice like you could not believe. A rock star & worthy of the Hartley Class of 71 & 72 Football coach team Hall of Fame..... R I P !

Mark was a terrific basketball coach. He was always positive and encouraging. His skill as a coach and leader in the community was always evident to many. He always went the extra mile to show his team how much he appreciated their efforts. I am sorry for your loss and may God give you strength to carry on his legacy.

Our sincere condolences to the Butt family. As the Supt. of Hartley Community School in 1969, I hired a new Girl's BB coach never expecting to employ as fine a man as Mark . His coaching record with over 500 wins will stand for a long time in Hartley and in Iowa sports After we both retired, we and other retired teachers met regularly at Red's Café
for some great conversations !
God bless you, Shirley, Mark, Mike and Mardi. Howard and Carol

To Shirlee & the rest of the family my dearest sympathy to all of you!
Coach & I had a special relationship and I have so many fond memories. He taught history class with lessons and movies. The amount of movies we watched in that class felt endless. All my extra credit assignments were to draw out every offensive play and then before the big games if a quiz was given in class, my quiz always had a second page which was to draw out the plays or the sidelines plays or describe in detail how to break the zone defense.
He loved to get you fired up by yelling, stomping down the sidelines, throwing a clip board or tossing his suit coat into the stands but at the end of the game he was the first to give you a hug.
My senior year I received quite a few honors and he was responsible for that. He wanted to drive me to those events and not anyone else! So we drove to the All-State awards banquet, the All-Star senior game and the Iowa coaches All-Star game together. We had quite a few miles in that car together just the two of us talking about the things he loved most in his life - Shirlee, his family, history and of course basketball.
I am so thankful to have called him my teacher, my friend and my Coach. I look forward to the day when I can see him again and I know the first thing he’ll say to me is “get on the line and shoot a free throw and if you miss you are going to run!”
Love always ~ Alisa (Nonneman) Heller

My sympathies to Shirlee, Mark, Mike, Mardi and their families on their loss. Mark has been in my prayers over the past year, he was a long time friend from days at Rodman, Hanau, Germany, Cedar Falls and Storm Lake. Mark was fun to be with, he was competitive, a person that played hard, worked hard. Mark inherited many good qualities from his parents; Evelyn and Andy Butt, they were good people, his sister Shirley was likewise.in the same mold. Mark will be missed by many.

My deepest sympathy to Mark's family. He was an exceptional basketball coach whom I respected very much. I enjoyed working with him at the Buena Vista summer basketball camps and in later years running into him and catching up with a short visit. Mark touched so many lives and he will be missed by many. God Bless ~

My sympathy to the Butt family. Coach Butt had a lasting impact on me. He didn’t hesitate to yell at me right in my face but was the first for a hug or a joke. He always grabbed your shirt when what he was about to say should be taken seriously. He understood how to get the most from his players.
Bringing home the title of 4th in State in 1983 was a highlight of my life. I thank Coach Butt and our team!!

I can’t even begin to say what an inspiration Mark was both as a teacher, coach, and friend. Was so fun to come visit and talk about basketball and track experiences! He was a coach that would do anything for his team. I have many fond memories and will miss him so much! May God wrap his loving arms around you at this difficult time. My love to all. My sympathies to Shirlee and the entire family. I had the privilege to meet Coach Butt when my wife and I got engaged. I had no idea way back then what a positive impact he had on Alisa and so many other young ladies who played for Coach Butt. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and know that Coach Butt will forever be in the hearts of those women who played their "butts" off for him.
