Obituary of William Vogelaar

William George Vogelaar, the son of Tunis and Cora (Van Duin) Vogelaar was born on February 22, 1927 in Hospers, IA. He spent his youth in the Sheldon and Sibley areas, and attended the Sibley Schools. William proudly served his country in the Armed Forces from 1946 through 1947. He attended Barber School in Sioux City, IA. On May 6, 1949 he married Doris Dougherty, and to this union, five children were born: Susan, Steven, Sherry, Rick and Billy. He worked as a trucker, and then managed Super America Stations in Sheldon. He owned his own tavern for two years before returning to the trucking profession, which he loved. Once he retired, he enjoyed fishing and gardening. At one time he had been a member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church, the Sibley VFW, and the Sheldon Eagles’ Club. Survivors include his children and their families: Susan (David) Janssen of Sibley, IA, Steven (Abby) Vogelaar of Sheldon, IA, Sherry Philiph and her fiancé Leon Zembsch of Ashton, IA, and Rick (Twyla) Vogelaar of Sanborn, IA; his close companion of many years, Wanda Bannister, along with her children and their families: Gloria Bannister of Missoula, MT, Dennis (Janet) Bannister of Jackson, MN, and Connie (Kevin) Schley of Milford, IA; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester and Donald Vogelaar; one sister Carol De Kam, as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Billy Joe, and two sisters, Ann Kristofferson and Irene Vogelaar.
