Obituary of Mary Flanagan

Mary Wright Flanagan, the daughter of Arthur and Anne (Dew) Wright was born on March 16, 1910 at Richfield, Idaho. Early in her youth the family moved back to Iowa where she and her two sisters grew up in the Dike, Iowa area. Mary attended school in Dike and graduated high school, and then went on to further her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After graduating from college she taught high school commercial subjects & mathematics and later became a high school principal in Pleasantville, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Carl E. Flanagan on August 14, 1937 in Dike, Iowa. In 1941 they purchased the Fonda Times Newspaper in Fonda, Iowa. They moved to Grinnell, Iowa in 1955 where they both worked for the state office of the Congregational Christian Conference for ten years. She also worked as an assistant administrator at the Mayflower Retirement Home in Grinnell. Iowa. Following Carl’s death in 1972, Mary remained in Grinnell, until she moved to Sanborn, Iowa in 1985. She lived in her own home for many years until moving to the Prairie View Manor. Mary entered the Prairie View Nursing Home on December 29, 2006, and passed away there on January 24, 2007.
Mary was a member of the St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church of Sanborn, Iowa and also belonged to the P.E.O. Club for over 50 years. She enjoyed her Bridge Clubs and was a huge Iowa and Iowa State sports fan.
She is survived by her son, Ken Flanagan and his wife, Judy, of Sanborn, Iowa; two granddaughters: Kelly Hansen and her husband, Doug, of Pittsburgh, PA, Erin Flanagan and her husband, Mike Dunekacke of Dayton, OH.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Arthula Ayer and Jeanette Stewart.
