Memorial Tribute
Cornelius "Cornie" Hartog, the son of Frank and Marie (Spyker) Hartog was born on October 22, 1920 on a farm near Rock Valley, IA. He grew up near Rock Valley and Maurice, IA where he attended Maurice country school. After school he continued to work on the family farm. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1942 and served in the Air Evacuation of the 9th Air Force. Cornie spent three years overseas serving his country, reaching the rank of Corporal. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 11, 1945.
Upon returning from serving his country, Cornie married Grace Vander Werff on November 29, 1945 at the Christian Reformed Church in Hull, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children, Ron, Marcia, Doris and Curt. In 1937 Cornie and his brother John started the family business known as the Hartog Elevator, where he worked and served the Sanborn community for 69 years. His greatest joy and blessing was to serve the Lord in all of his life. He was a kind and loving husband and father. His strength in all of life was from the Lord. Cornie’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a blessing to him and gave him much love and joy. He was special to all of them & he loved them dearly. One of his favorite passages was III John verse 4 “I have no greater joy than to hear my children walk in truth”. Cornie passed away at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on November 21, 2006.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife: Grace of 61 years; two daughters: Marcia Douma and her husband, Bob, of Sanborn, IA and Doris Krikke and her husband, Eldon, of Hartley, IA; a son: Curt Hartog and his wife, Darlene, of Sanborn, IA. 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren other relatives and many friends made through his years in business.
Cornie was preceded in death by his son Ron in 1988, his parents and his eight brothers and sisters.
He was a past member of the Christian Reformed Church in Sanborn where he served as an elder and a deacon. Cornie was a charter member of the Cornerstone United Reformed Church. He enjoyed all of God’s creations by camping, fishing and traveling. He loved to drive around in his pick-up and to play pool with his friends.
