Obituary of Carol Baumgarn

Memorial Tribute Carol Jean Baumgarn, daughter of Dick and Irma (Schlicht) Stellingwerf, was born November 17, 1933 at Sutherland, Iowa. As a young girl, Carol and her parents moved to a farm north of Melvin, Iowa where she attended the local country school through the 8th grade. She completed her education at Melvin High School, graduating with the class of 1952. Following her graduation, Carol took the position of secretary for the Melvin school for the next three years. On June 28, 1953, she was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Baumgarn of Ocheyedan, Iowa at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. To this union, three children were born: Michael, Sandra, and Randy. Carol loved to be around people, and her occupations were proof of that. She was employed at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa for 12 years, and was the coordinator for the Sanborn Dinner Date for several years. She also enjoyed working in local eating establishments, meeting new faces and always serving up something good to eat or drink with a friendly smile. After 25-plus years at Jay's Restaurant in Sanborn, people came to consider her a permanent fixture at the well-known diner. Even with each day full of its own activity, Carol always had time for her friends and family. She relished the time spent with her children and grandchildren, however short or long it may have been. Carol had been a member of the American Lutheran Church in Melvin where she was baptized and confirmed. She later joined the Presbyterian Church in Sanborn. She passed from this life on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the age of 82. With her passing, Carol joins her parents, Dick and Irma Stellingwerf; her husband, Robert; sister, Marlys Stellingwerf; father and mother-in-law, George and Augusta Baumgarn; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don and Della Baumgarn, Bud and Dorothy Bunjer. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Michael (Beverly) Baumgarn of Sibley, IA, Sandra Luenberger of Sanborn, IA, Randy (Jo) Baumgarn also of Sanborn, IA; 5 grandchildren: Melissa (Cory) Danneman, Jason Folkens, Kari (Ben) Nelessen, Colby (Rachel) Baumgarn, Reanna Baumgarn; step-grandchildren: Monica (Cory) Murray, Stephanie (Sean) Wolf; 7 great-grandchildren: Jonathan Danneman, Kacie Folkens, Danielle Folkens, Camden Nelessen, Adilee Nelessen, Hardy Baumgarn, Hudson Baumgarn, and baby Nelessen, who's on the way; 4 step-great-grandchildren; Cody Murray, Abby Murray, John Wolf, and Blake Wolf; one brother, David (Teresa) Stellingwerf of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and brother-in-law, Walt Stellingwerf, and his special friend, Shirley Cummings also of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; other relatives and many friends.
