Memorial Tribute
Velma Magdalena Holtz, the daughter of Fred and Molly (Gonnerman) Rost, was born in Hartley, Iowa on July 25, 1921. She graduated from Hartley High School.
She was united in marriage to Melvin Henry Holtz in Hartley, Iowa on June 1, 1947. Following their marriage, they had two sons, Gayle and Doug, and one daughter, Peggy. They lived in Hartley until 1970 when they moved to Spencer, Iowa.
Velma was a full-time homemaker while her children were young. She was an assistant den mother for her sons’ Cub Scout troops. Once her children were older, she worked in retail and at the Spencer Daily Reporter for several years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hartley. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed going to dances, reading mysteries, working word puzzles, traveling out west, watching Minnesota Vikings football, watching her grandson after school, and visiting with friends and family.
Velma passed away on February 25, 2016 at the age of 94 in Bloomington, Indiana. Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers: Ronald, Morris, and Darold; her husband, Melvin; and her son, Gayle.
Velma is survived by one son, Doug of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one daughter and her husband, Peggy Holtz and Neal Hazeltine of Bloomington, Indiana; one grandchild, Ian Holtz-Hazeltine of Bloomington, Indiana; her sister-in-law, Arlys Rost of Hartley, Iowa; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Maynard and Leona Holtz of Everly, Iowa; several nephews and nieces; and other relatives and friends.
