Memorial Tribute
Richard "Dick" Melvin Schwien, son of Melvin and Lois Irene (Conner) Schwien was born November 15, 1945 at Hartley, IA. He spent his youth and attended school at Hartley, graduating from Hartley High School with the class of 1965.
Following graduation, Dick furthered his education at Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, MN. In 1966, he joined the Army National Guard and was called for active duty in May of 1968, being stationed at Fort Carson, CO. He obtained his honorable discharge in September, 1969.
Upon returning to Iowa, Dick worked in construction at Des Moines for a time, and then in 1971, relocated back to Colorado. He was employed with the Coors Brewing Company in Denver for the next 27 years. During his employment, he enjoyed bowling and playing softball on Coors teams. He also enjoyed fishing and getting in on a good game of cards with the guys. After retiring in 1998, with time on his hands, he took on other part-time jobs around the Denver area. Wanting to take life a little easier, Dick left Colorado in 2005, and moved to Johnson Lake, NE. After all his years in Colorado, he remained a died-in-the-wool Denver Broncos fan, and watched them whenever he could.
Dick moved back to Hartley in February of this year. He was a member of the Arthur W. Kirchhoff American Legion, Post #288. Dick passed from this life on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at the age of 70.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Lois Schwien; his brother-in-law, Pat Fanning; and his nephew, Jerry Tewes.
Left to remember him in this life are his sisters: Marlene (Donnie) Nielsen, Judy Fanning, and Connie (Tim) Brewster; one brother, Jim (Joan) Schwien; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; last, but not least, his faithful dog, Bogey.
