Obituary of Glenn Veldboom

Please share a memory of Glenn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Glenn Myron Veldboom, the second son of Albert and Edith (Douma) Veldboom, was born March 23, 1936 near Sheldon, IA. In 1939 at the age of 3, they moved to the farm northwest of Hartley. That was a tragic first year on the farm since his 6 year-old brother, Orville, was killed in a farm accident. Glenn received his early education in the one-room school house just north of the farm. When he was 16, he made the decision to stay home and farm alongside his dad, but he still completed his GED in 1969. In the mid-1950s, he met and fell in love with Norma Jean Miller. They were united in marriage on June 22, 1957, at the Methodist Church, Sheldon, IA. They first lived on an acreage one mile south of the home farm, and then in 1958 they moved onto the family farm that he loved. They were blessed with 3 children, Randal, Tamra, and Lance. Glenn worked hard on the farm but also enjoyed camping and planning trips with his children and grandchildren. He reached his goal of visiting all 50 states. He was active in Farm Bureau and the Republican Party. After retiring from farming in 1994, they moved into Hartley and he continued to enjoy many more years of driving his school bus route. During retirement, Glenn and Norma spent summers living in their camper at Cutty’s Resort on Lake Okoboji . Glenn recently wrote out his testimony when they became members of Maple Grove Church of God of Peterson: In June of 1970 I was convicted that I was lost and realized that I was a sinner and needed to accept Christ as my personal Savior. On January 30, 1972, I was obedient and followed the Lord in believer’s baptism. For years they were members of Central Avenue Baptist Church of Hartley until it closed in 2006. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma; his children: Randy (Linda) Veldboom of New London, IA; Tami MacDonald of Sioux Falls, SD; and Lance (Megan) Veldboom of Grinnell, IA. His nine grandchildren include Jennifer, Ryan (Mollie), and Austin Veldboom; Sean and Ian MacDonald; Elizabeth, Emmaleah, Naomi, and Rebekah Veldboom; and one great-grand daughter, Annaka Veldboom. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother. Glenn never lost his zeal to explore and learn. He loved collecting – belt buckles, coins, and toy farm tractors – particularly CASE. He embraced new technology that his children gave him: GPS, cell phone, and his laptop. His family will miss his daily emails and devotional postings. Glenn enjoyed life, loved God, family, and friends and everyone enjoyed his sense of humor.
