Lyla Mae (Wieman) Balliet, daughter of Henry and Callie (Hulbert) Wieman, was born July 22, 1921 on a farm five miles northwest of Sanborn, IA. Lyla and her sister, Faye, attended the country school near their farm, completing their education at the Sanborn Public School. Following graduation from Sanborn High School in 1939, Lyla continued her education for one year at the National Business School in Sioux City, IA.
Lyla's business career began in 1940 at the Sanborn Savings Bank where she was employed for over five years. Later, she worked at the First National Bank in Primghar, IA. In 1969, she became the City Clerk for the city of Hartley, IA; a position she held for approximately 20 years. During her tenure as City Clerk she received the status of Certified Municipal Clerk, and also an International Institute of Municipal Clerk. She was a member of the Iowa Finance Officers Association, as well as the Executive Director of the Low Rent Housing Agency of Hartley for 20 years.
On March 29, 1945, Lyla married George Arvel Balliet at Ft. Bliss, TX. To this union two children were born; a son, Gary and a daughter, Karen. While living in Texas, Lyla worked at the Triple A Supply at Ft. Bliss.
Following George's military discharge in 1945, the couple returned to Sanborn where Lyla became the bookkeeper for a local implement dealer. In 1949, their son, Gary was born, and Karen followed in 1955. While Lyla raised her family, she also filled in as George's relief truck driver. Eventually, they moved to Hartley and resided there the majority of their married life.
Lyla enjoyed sewing in her free time, along with gardening and canning produce. Good times were had playing cards and fishing with George. She was a life-time member of the United Methodist Church. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were Lyla's pride and joy. She passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at the age of 92.
Left to mourn her passing are her son, Gary Balliet and his wife, Ronna, of Sergeant Bluff, IA; their sons and families: Aaron, Alison and Evan Balliet of Shawnee, KS; Brett, Ashley and Corbin Balliet of North Liberty, IA; and Christopher Balliet of Sergeant Bluff; her daughter, Karen Keller and her husband, Rodney, of Hartley, IA; their daughters and families: Trisha (Uthe) Pearson and her husband, Jeremy; their children: Kaley, Zachary and Mallory of Hartley, IA, Ashley (Uthe) Daggett and her husband, Isaiah; their children: Natalie, Isabelle, Hunter and Preston; Nicole Keller and Michael Shire of Spencer, IA, other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
