Elmer Carl Mack, Son of Michael C. and Bertha D. (Meyer) Mack, was born on March 31, 1920 at Pomeroy, IA in Pocahontas County. He was the sixth of ten children. Elmer was baptized and confirmed in the Missouri Lutheran faith, and attended country schools in both Pocahontas and Calhoun counties during his youth. He helped his parents on the farm until 1942 when he entered the military. Elmer served with the 8th Army Air Corp in the European Theatre until 1946. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Pomeroy and began farming.
In 1950, Elmer met Winifred E. Johnson of Mallard, IA. On December 10th of the same year, they were united in marriage at Bethany Lutheran Church in Laurens, IA. The couple lived on, and farmed the Michael C. Mack place for seven years, then moved to Pomeroy where Elmer managed a Thermogas business for 11 years. He later transferred with the company to Hartley, IA, and worked there for 14 years until his retirement. Elmer and Winifred moved to Cherokee Village, AR in June of 1982, and lived there until moving back to Hartley at their current residence in December of 1992.
Elmer was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #288, both of Hartley. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and tending his lawn, flowers and shrubs. He especially relished the time spent with his buddies having morning coffee together in Hartley.
