Memorial Tribute
God’s good and faithful servant Shirley M. Groot passed away on March 21, 2012 to be with her Lord in Heaven, and to fellowship with her many loved ones that have gone on before, and are now greeting her with open arms. Shirley Groot was born on March 2, 1925, in Everett, WA to Ernest L. and Velma (Kelley) Powlesland. Shirley lived in Everett, WA and Kalispell, MT until she moved to Sheldon, IA in 1940.
On August 14, 1941, Shirley married Henry J. Groot of Sheldon. Henry and Shirley traveled throughout the south, where they preached and taught at many different churches. They pastored at churches in both Milford and Estherville, IA and Eau Claire, WI. They moved to Sheldon in 1956, and together they operated the Groot Family Farm on the north side of the city. They also served as pastor at Sheldon Gospel Tabernacle (now Parkview Assembly); and during this time Shirley hosted a daily Gospel radio program produced by Shirley and her husband Henry, who preceded her in death on December 26, 2007.
Shirley leaves six children to cherish her memory, including four daughters; Barbara Hiserote of Sheldon, IA; Bonnie (Harry) Robinson of Portland, OR; Ruth (John) Merrell and Rachel (James) Evans both of Naples, FL; and Shirley’s two sons - Jay Groot of Sheldon, IA; and David (Jodi) Groot of Salt Lake City, UT.
Shirley’s grandchildren are - Don Hiserote of Tulsa, OK; Dale Hiserote of Oregon City, OR; Rachel Groot of Portland, OR; Dr. Jeffrey Robinson of Albany, OR; Debra Loop of Salem, OR; Trey Merrell of Royal Oak, MI; Stephanie Koeshall of Centreville, VA; Kaitlyn and Joseph Groot of Salt Lake City, UT; and Audrey Groot of Sheldon, IA.
Surviving Shirley are her eleven great grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter, and her brother Ernest (Euzelia) Powlesland of Florence, SC.
…As believers in Christ as our personal savior our hope and confidence is that we each have the opportunity to go to meet her some day in Heaven. We love you Mom, we love you forever and always, and we WILL see you someday up there. We know Shirley is counting on meeting us again, and oh what a LEGACY she left for each one of us, and what a GOAL she left for each one of us, to greet her and fellowship with her, all of the saints, and our Lord some wonderful day in Heaven …
