Phyllis Mae Dean, the daughter of Howard and Lenora (Green) Dean, was born on October 20, 1920 near Hartley, IA. During her childhood she lived on farms near Pipestone, MN, Janesville, WI, and Sanborn, IA. She graduated from High School in Sanborn, and then attended business school in Sioux City, IA.
Following graduation from business school, her entire working career was spent at Mutual of New York Insurance—first in Sioux City, and later in Tucson, AZ, where she worked until her retirement. In 1999, she moved back to Hartley, and was a charter resident of the Homestead Senior Housing (Morningside Estates).
Phyllis was a great seamstress and knitter, making many of her nieces’ clothes when she was growing up. She loved to play cards with both family and friends, and hosted many bridge clubs over the years. She also spent many Sunday afternoons play cards with Kenneth. She enjoyed traveling, reading, puzzles, crafts, and receiving e-mails. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Doris M. Kern, and brother-in-law Kennth L. Kern.
Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her niece, Cheryl A. Petersen of Arnolds Park, IA and nephew Kenneth L. Kern, II of Hartley; great nieces and nephews, Michele Petersen of Spirit Lake, IA, Matt and Laurinda Petersen of Elkhorn, NE, Amanda Petersen of Eden Prairie, MN, Kevin Kern and fiancé Kendra Howe of Mankato, MN, Kimberly Kern and fiancé Ryan Magon of Mobile, AL; great-grand nieces Madelyn and Mollie Petersen of Elkhorn, NE; many cousins and good friends across the country.
