Please share a memory of Vanden to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lyla Beth (Reinsma) Vanden Hoek was born September 4, 1944, in Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Jurrian “Jerry” and Sarah “Dolly” (Wiersma) Reinsma. Beth was raised in Orange City and attended Orange City Christian School and Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa.
After high school she moved to Corsica, South Dakota, and worked as a nursing assistant at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. While working in Corsica, she met her future husband, Richard Dale Vanden Hoek. The couple was married January 3, 1964, in Orange City, Iowa. They began their married life in Springfield, South Dakota, where Richard finished his teaching degree at Southern State College. They lived in Gettysburg, South Dakota, for one year, and in 1966, Richard’s teaching career led them to Sanborn, Iowa, where they were currently living. Following a debilitating stroke on December 2, 2010, Beth passed away at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on June 5, 2011, at the age of 66.
Beth was an active member of Sanborn First Reformed Church. She was the Senior Choir Director for many years, as well as organist, pianist, RCYF youth sponsor, and played for special music groups. Her love of music spread over many years and many venues. She taught piano and organ, played for high school small and large group contests, the Gloryland Quartet, church services at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, Iowa, and would perform organ recitals for area churches that purchased a new organ. She was also an active member of the community of Sanborn, playing and directing Easter & Christmas cantatas, babysitting for many different families, and for 21 years worked as a teaching assistant at HMS Middle School. Beth loved being a grandmother, scrapbooking, traveling, playing canasta, and enjoyed fellowshipping with friends during card club.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jurrian Reinsma and a sister, Leann Bieseker.
Survivors include her husband Richard; her mother Sarah “Dolly” Reinsma of Sanborn; three children and their families: Douglas (Deb) Vanden Hoek of Omaha, Nebraska, and their children, Tiffany (Dan) McMahan and Courtney Vanden Hoek; Tamara (Rich) Unland of Indianapolis, Indiana and their children, Isaiah, Caleb, Joshua, Elijah, and Jonah; Crissa (Eric) Krikke of Sanborn, and their children, Travis, Reid, and Brielle; one brother Larry (Audrey) Reinsma of Wheaton, Illinois; one sister Lois (Frank) Russell of Shafter, California; many nieces and nephews.
