Obituary of Gertie Harms

Gertie (Korthals) Harms, the daughter of Edward and Grace (Mulder) Korthals was born near Carmel, IA, on June 26, 1913. She grew up in the Matlock, IA area where she received her education.
Gertie was united in marriage to Henry Harms on October 24, 1932 in Matlock, IA. To this union two daughters were born, Evelyn and Bev. Following their marriage the couple farmed together near Beaver Creek, MN, in 1936 they moved to a farm near Boyden, IA, and in 1940 they moved to a farm southeast of Hartley, IA. In 1959 they retired and moved into the town of Hartley. Henry passed away on January 26, 1988. Gertie entered the Primghar Care Center on August 21, 2003 and passed away there on May 11, 2011 at the age of 97.
She was active in church activities, enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, quilting and fishing. She will be affectionately remembered by all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gertie was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Dorcas Society and was a long-time Ladies Aid member and church supporter.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Evelyn Bruns and her husband, Charles, of Primghar, IA, Bev Dau and her husband Darwin of Paullina, IA; six grandchildren: Chad Dau and his wife, Becky, of Paullina, IA, Cory Dau and his wife, Anita, of Paullina, IA Shannon Grau and her husband, Gordon, of Newell, IA, Dianne Dirks and her husband, Marvin, of Pocahontas, IA, Darrell Bruns and his wife, Terra, of Saugus, CA, Darlene Carlson and her husband, Mike, of Spencer, IA; sixteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a granddaughter-in-law: Marie Bruns of Galva, IA; a brother; Herman Korthals and his wife, Shirley, of Los Angeles, CA, sister-in-law: Louise De Vries of Sanborn, IA ; other relatives and friends.
Gertie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry, grandson, Dale Bruns, two brothers: Fred Korthals and Leonard Korthals at infancy; three sisters: Jennie Arends, Henrietta Roetman, and Johanna Hiemensen.
