Memorial Tribute
William (Bill) Francis Muilenburg, son of Alvin “Slim” and Gertrude (Plopper) Muilenburg was born on October 7, 1934 in Hartley, IA. He grew up in Hartley, where he attended school, graduating from Hartley High School in 1952. Bill worked for several area farmers and then joined the marines. He was discharged honorably from the marines on the morning of June 7, 1956, and later that day, married the love of his life, Corie Jordan, in San Diego, CA. The young couple then moved to Hartley, IA.
Bill worked as a mechanic for Lars Bersheim until he took over the business, and renamed it “Bill’s Garage”. After retiring from his own business fourteen years ago, he worked for Med Equip, delivering beds and oxygen, particularly for hospice patients. He worked for a few years with Dave Scroggin as a handy man. He then became a full-time coffee drinker and hospital patient. He fought an eleven-year battle with cancer.
Bill loved being around people. He was an active member of the Hartley United Methodist Church, and enjoyed selling tickets for the annual turkey supper. He was a former volunteer fire-fighter and a Mason. He had a passion for wood-working, bowling, working on puzzles and reading. He used to go dancing every Saturday night and loved restoring old cars and watching NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt. At one time he had been on the pit crew for 707.
Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Corie; his children, Kim Muilenburg of Hartley, Larry and Tammy Muilenburg of Sutherland, IA, Brad and Cindy Taylor of Hartley, and Kyle and Bethany Kolb of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren, Amy (Taylor) and her husband, Doug Horton, April Taylor, Cameron Crist, Cali Muilenburg, Landon Kolb, and Carter Kolb; one sister and two brothers; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Corie’s parents, Riley and Marie Jordan, two brothers, David and Raymond Muilenburg, and a granddaughter, Desiree Crist.
