Obituary of Oscar Nugent
Please share a memory of Oscar to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Oscar Ervin Nugent, the son of William and Anna (Schroeder) Nugent, was born on October 28, 1921 in Sheldon, Iowa.
He married Caroline Wathen on September 19, 1955 in Pipestone, Minnesota. They made their home in rural Sibley, Iowa. Together, they operated Nugent’s Jewelry in Sibley for nearly 50 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Teresa and Carol.
Oscar enjoyed spending time with his little Chihuahua dogs that he loved so much, visiting with his customers in the jewelry store, and riding his bicycle.
As fate would have it, Oscar and Caroline were both stricken with Alzheimer’s disease. Following a steady decline in his health, Oscar became a resident of the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa in November 1996. Caroline’s battle with Alzheimer’s ended when she passed away on June 17, 2006. Oscar continued his own struggle, until succumbing to the disease on March 13, 2010, while still at home at the Community Memorial Health Center. He was 88. During his time there, he had so enjoyed visiting with the wonderful staff that they had become like family to him.
He is survived by his daughters, Teresa Popkes and husband Randy of George, Iowa, and Carol Van Arnam and husband Mike of Spencer, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Caroline, his infant daughter Mary Ann, and one brother, Walter.
Memorials given in Oscar’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
