Please share a memory of Gerald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gerald “Jerry” James Hakeman, the son of Cornyle and Esther (Brinkert) Hakeman, was born on August 11, 1930 at Sanborn, Iowa. He grew up in Sanborn and graduated from Sanborn Community High School. He went on to Iowa State University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957.
Jerry was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Ann Archer. They made their home in Huntington Beach, CA, and were blessed with three children, James, Kevin, and Michelle. While in California, Jerry was employed by the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation as an aerospace engineer. In 1974 the family moved to Sanborn, and Jerry joined his brother, Don in the family’s farming operation. He continued to farm until his retirement in 1993. When his health began to fail in 2007, he moved to the Prairie View Campus in Sanborn. He passed away there on Friday, March 12, 2010 at the age of 79.
Jerry was an avid reader, and faithfully took time to read his daily devotions. He enjoyed following the financial markets. He had a giving heart, and graciously donated toward many charities. He cherished the times he could spend with his grandchildren. He dearly loved the many caregivers and fellow residents at the Prairie View Campus. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sanborn.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: James Hakeman of Des Moines, IA, Kevin Hakeman of Sanborn, IA, and Michelle (Hakeman) and husband Scott Henning of Davenport, IA; his four grandchildren, Nicole and Heather Fawcett, and Max and Mackenzie Henning; four brothers and their wives, Don and Marna Hakeman of Sanborn, Bob and Chris Hakeman of Huron, OH, Bill and Ande Hakeman of Lafayette, LA, and Tom and Candy Hakeman of Brown’s Point, WA; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
