Memorial Tribute
Victor A. Peplau, the son of Joanna (Koll) and John Peplau, was born on May 26, 1918 at Lily, South Dakota. He grew up and received his early education in South Dakota. Vic proudly served in the U.S. Army beginning in September of 1941 until he was honorably discharged on October 15, 1945.
On January 30, 1951, he was united in marriage to Helen Penning at Ashton, Iowa. The couple lived on a farm near Ashton for many years. It was there that they raised their two sons, Marvin and James.
They continued living on the farm until their retirement. They moved into Sheldon in 1983, and eventually to Sanborn.
Besides his love for farming, Vic enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and listening to his polka records. He liked building things with his hands, such as birdhouses and funny little wooden gadgets. During their later years, he lovingly and patiently tended to Helen’s needs as her illness progressed. He followed her into Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn in 2007. Following Helen’s death on April 4, 2008, he spent much of his time reading, doing word-finds, and watching the birds feed outside of his window. He passed away at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center on December 14, 2009. He was 91.
Survivors include his sons and their families: Marvin and his wife Janet of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, and Jim and his special friend, Laurie Siemonsma of Archer, Iowa; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three sisters: Irmina Reinstra of Everett, Washington, Gertrude (Mrs. Lawrence) Achen of Reedsport, Oregon, and Clara (Mrs. Lawrence) Allen of Dell Rapids, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: John, Frank, Albert, Martin and Raymond, and one sister Odelia.
