Florence Dorothy (Schultz) Hoftyzer, the daughter of Violet (Anderson) and Herman Schultz, was born on January 15, 1933, and raised in Elgin, Illinois.
She was united in marriage to Harold M. Hoftyzer Sr., on January 31, 1951, in Wheaton, Illinois. Their life together began in Vinton, Iowa, and they moved to Hartley in the fall of 1951. They opened Harold's Jewelry, which they owned and operated for 40 years. Along with helping Harold at the store, Florence took care of their home and helped raise their four children: Harold Jr., Roger, Sharon and Karen. In 1966 they moved to a farm near Hartley and later built their cabin at Okoboji. Florence passed away unexpectedly at her daughter's home in Kelley, Iowa, on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at the age of 76.
Florence was a true sales lady from the first day the jewelry store opened until her last day, of life working the craft fair in Ames. Her love for people and service was based on her love for Jesus Christ. She stayed busy in many years of loving service cooking, teaching and being involved at all 3 churches she and Harold attended. Her current community service included the hospital auxiliary, blood mobile, Friends of the Library as well as the Okoboji Bible Conference. She dedicated her life to giving to others. She especially loved her time with grandchildren and great grandchildren and her "down" time at the lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her husband, Harold Sr., of Hartley, her children and their families: Harold Jr. and Jill of Orange City, Iowa, Roger and Sandy of Hartley, Iowa, Sharon and Leroy Harmsen of Kelley, Iowa, and Karen of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister Edith Scarbrough of Warsaw, Missouri, and many other relatives and friends.
