Memorial Tribute
Jacob (Jake) Van Dyke, the son of Jim and Tena (De Groot) Van Dyke, was born on March 25, 1913 in Lucas, MI. When Jake was a young child his family moved to Hospers, IA.
On June 19, 1935 he married Bessie DeVries at her parents’ farm just east of Sanborn. Jake and Bessie farmed in the Sanborn area until 1966 when they moved into the town of Sanborn. Jake then worked as a sales manager for Cargill and later Golden Harvest seed until his retirement. They later lived in Sioux Center for ten years, and then moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. During their retirement, the couple spent many winters at Alamo, TX. In 2006 they moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn.
Jake was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendant. He loved to fish, travel, golf, bowl, play cards and shuffle board where he won many trophies. Jake passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009 at the age of 96 at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, IA.
He is survived by his four children: Jim and Joy Van Dyke of Sanborn, Gary and Laura Van Dyke of Holland, MI, Jessie and Franklin Vandenberg of Overland Park, KS, and Judi and Eugene Vonk of Ireton, IA; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; his brother: Marion (Annette) Van Dyke of Grand Rapids, MI; two sisters: Bertha Vander Plaats of Sanborn, IA, Reka Andringa of Sheldon, IA; and a sister-in-law June Van Dyke of Sanborn, IA; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Bessie; two brothers:Herman and John; four sisters: Rose DeBoer, Tena Van Dyke, Anna Talsma and Beatrice Andringa; and a grandson: Timothy Vandenberg.
