Obituary of Alice DeBoer

Alice Annetta (Groen) De Boer, the daughter of Hattie (Smith) and Ernest Groen, was born on July 29, 1917 at Cherokee, Iowa. The family moved from Cherokee to George and later to Ashton where Alice attended country school for eight years and graduated from Ashton High School. She took three years of nurse’s training at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. After receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse, she worked as a private duty nurse in Sioux City for two years.
On January 27, 1941 she was united in marriage to Lester DeBoer at her parent’s farm near Hartley, Iowa. They began farming near Hartley. Alice continued her passion for nursing for a total of 43 years, working at various locations including the Community Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home in Hartley. During this time, she also received recognition for her service to the American Red Cross. Upon retirement, the couple moved into a new home in Hartley. Lester passed away in 1981.
Alice and Lester loved to travel, and did so extensively to Hawaii and Europe, and on many bus tours throughout the United States. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, music and gambling. She was a member of Trinity UCC and the Dorcas Society. She passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley on July 12, 2009 at the age of 91.
Survivors include three sisters-in-law: Faye Groen and Lucille Quist of Hartley, Ioan Lubinski of Minneapolis, MN; as well as thirteen nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester, and four brothers: Leo, Richard, Irwin and Arthur.
