Obituary of Virgil Treimer

Virgil William Treimer was born to William and Emma Krebs Treimer on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1914 in O’Brien County, IA. He passed away March 6, 2009 in Sanborn, IA. As a young child, Virgil was baptized and became a child of God. Later, Virgil was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley, IA. Virgil graduated from Hartley High School in 1932. He excelled in football and music. He was honored to go to the National Band Contest in Detroit, MI playing tenor saxophone. In 1934, he graduated from the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, IA and then went on to the University of Iowa graduating from there in 1938. He opened an insurance office in Sheldon, IA, but when World War II broke out, Virgil enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was assigned to teach new recruits in Bainbridge, MD. Later, he requested sea duty and became a 1st Class Petty Officer. Upon being honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to Hartley and joined his father in Treimer’s Insurance Agency. He became Secretary and Director of O’Brien County Mutual Insurance Assn. and also worked as Director of IMT in Des Moines, IA. Virgil loved promoting Hartley, as well as the surrounding communities. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Secretary of the Lutheran Men’s Club, Secretary of the Hartley School Board, Director of the Hartley Hospital Board, Co-Chair of the Foundation Board for the Hartley Medical Clinic, a member of the American Legion Post 288, a member of the committee to start the Meadowbrook Golf Course and worked with Meals on Wheels. He was named King of the Hartley quasqui centennial in 2004, a long-time member of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce and served on many other organizations. Virgil and Doris Salton Treimer were married February 26, 1950. Five children were born to this happy couple. He was preceded in death by: his parents; an infant son; two brothers: Wilbert and Wayne; Doris’s parents: William and Ida Salton; four sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law and many of his good friends and relatives. Virgil is survived by his wife Doris of 59 years, his children: Ellen Treimer of Hartley, IA, Margaret Velez and her husband, Jorge, of Long Beach, CA, Debra Wasser and her husband, Rich, of Rolling Hills Estates, CA, William Treimer and his wife, Patty, of Hartley, IA; his grandchildren: Meredith, Marcus, and Valerie Treimer, and Peter Velez; a brother: Donald Treimer and his wife, Luetta, of Hartley, IA, and many relatives and friends. Virgil was a loving husband, parent, and grandparent. He was known for making delicious fudge. Virgil was always cheerful, enjoyed his life, loved God and his country and always had a good sense of humor. He had many sayings such as, “Everyday is a good day,” and often ended conversations with “till we meet again.” In Remembrance of Virgil W.
