Obituary of Bob West

Memorial Tribute Robert Arthur West, the son of Arthur and Frances (Epping) West, was born on November 17, 1917 in Primghar, Iowa. He spent his childhood years in the Sanborn and Hartley areas, where he attended country school. He entered active duty in the U.S. Army on February 25, 1943, and served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945. On April 21, 1949 he was united in marriage to Joyce Rose Conner at Royal, Iowa. In the early years of their marriage, the couple farmed near Melvin and Hartley. Bob worked at Hunting Elevator in Hartley for 11 years. They later farmed near Park Rapids, MN, where he also worked in a lumber yard. After he quit farming, he held various custodial positions, including one for the Estherville, Iowa High School. Later, after his retirement, he was custodian for the Hartley United Methodist Church. Bob and Joyce moved to Prairie View Manor in Sanborn in 2005, and then to Prairie View Nursing Home in April, 2008. He passed away there on June 10, 2008 at the age of 90. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Sanborn, and the Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post of the American Legion in Hartley. He enjoyed reading and playing cards. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Joyce; one brother Charles West of Sanborn; one sister Marilyn and her husband, Dale Peters of Hartley; two sisters-in-law, Lois Schwien of Hartley, and Darlene Graves of Waupaca, WI; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marcella Jenness and Maxine West; two brothers, Don West and Darrel West; and two brothers in infancy. In Loving Memory… Robert A.
