Obituary of Henry Groot

Memorial Tribute Henry Groot was born on August 6, 1915 to John and Maria (Den Beste) Groot, in a farmhouse 3 miles south of Sanborn, Iowa. He lived in Sanborn until he was 9 years old; the Groot family moved to Sheldon in 1924. On August 14, 1941, Henry married Shirley Powlesland of Everett, Washington. Henry and Shirley settled in Sheldon in 1956 and Henry began farming the Groot family farm on the north side of Sheldon. As a pastor, evangelist and Bible teacher, Henry and Shirley traveled throughout the south, where Henry preached and taught at many different churches. During his early years he pastored churches in Milford and Estherville, Iowa and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Henry was actively involved in the leadership of Parkview Assembly of God, as Bible teacher, song leader and member of the Church Board. He additionally served as pastor for the local congregation on several occasions, totaling over 15 years of faithful leadership. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Shirley; two sons: Jay and his wife Lori Groot of Sheldon, and David and his wife Jodi Groot of Salt Lake City, Utah; four daughters: Barbara Hiserote of Sheldon, Bonnie and her husband Harry Robinson of Portland, Oregon, Ruth and her husband John Merrell of Madrid, Spain, and Rachel and her husband James Evans of Naples, Florida; 11 grandchildren: Don and his wife Heather Hiserote of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dale and his wife Winona Hiserote of Oregon City, Oregon, Rachel Groot of Portland, Oregon, J.E. Robinson, M.D. of Albany, Oregon, Debra and her husband Chip Loop of Salem, Oregon, Sgt. Trey Merrell and his wife Lindsey of Detroit, Michigan, Stephanie and her husband Christian Koeshall of Virginia, Kaitlyn and Joseph Groot, Audrey Groot, and Maren and Connor Larson; eight great-grandchildren: Melissa and her husband Aaron Boone, Megan Hiserote, Sarah, Aedan and Aina Robinson, and Amanda, Jared and Macy Loop; one brother Marion and his wife Laura Groot, and two sisters: Katherine Mouw and Dorothy Vanderburg, all of Sheldon.
