Memorial Tribute
Darrel Jerome West, the son of Arthur and Frances (Epping) West, was born on September 21, 1929 near Sanborn, IA. He spent his youth growing up on the family farm east of Sanborn. Darrel attended country school and went on to graduate from Hartley High School.
On August 28, 1951, Darrel, joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He served his country for two years and was honorably discharged on August 27, 1953. He spent two years in Minor Seminary aspiring to be a priest. He ultimately chose the vocation of the single life dedicated to God. For a short time he was employed by a bakery where he delivered goods on his truck route. Darrel then returned to the family farm where he was engaged in farming. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, and a strong supporter of many missions. He passed away at home on the family farm on December 8, 2007 at the age of 78.
Darrel had a passion for motorcycles and farming, and a love for his many pets that he raised on the farm. One of his greatest joys in life was collecting clocks for his sister Maxine.
Survivors include two brothers: Robert West and his wife, Joyce, of Hartley, IA, and Charles West of Sanborn, IA; a sister, Marilyn Peters and her husband, Dale (Buzz) of Hartley, IA; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, his brother Don West and two sisters, Maxine West and Marcella Jenness.
